I blame the Met Office

A Westerly wind ranging from SSW to NNW made for an interesting day with boats gaining and losing quite significant leads and the fleet finishing roughly within ten minutes of each other.

After the rabbit start at 15 the course was 3S 13P 4S 12P 5S 11P 6S 9P 8P with the finish line between marks 6S and 7P. The intention was to maximise the short upwind legs with a series of zigs, and to challenge crews with spinnakers etc in the short down wind legs. As ever the wind was fickle under Claife and around Mark 4. High Five gained a significant lead at one point but parked in a hole at Mark 8 - she still managed to take line honours. But Slippery When Wet seemed true to her name and to just glided around the course finishing 77 seconds behind High Five - with the CYCA handicap that translated into an 14.5 minute lead. Ju Ju were doing well but failed to read to the bottom of the SMS with the finish line details and headed off to Mark 15, so retired.

To make matters worse, RWYC elected to head South and apparently it was wonderful - In short not the Sailing Sec's finest hour! Mea culpa, next Westerly we go South!

A good turnout on a fine day gave close racing with occasionally challenging conditions for short handed crews. Pura Vida looked ahead on the water but corrected times show a different picture with Seventh Heaven taking Race 2 and the fleet close together for both races. Nevertheless, Pura Vida held on to pip Seventh Heaven to this year's September Cup.
