2022 Results: Spinoff Challenge (Day 1)

Sailing Secretary • 24 July 2022

Felt like an early start to the winter series.

Last year's winner, Greyhound, was unable to race and the season's current in-form crew, Seventh Heaven, are reportedly "resting". The weather wasn't especially kind and everyone gor thoroughly soaked, but the wind was reasonable starting S and backing SE but 5-12kt throughout.

It was great to see Paul out with Ian and Josh on Volante and winning both races on the water. Jailbreak and Volante seemed to be battling each other all over the course for both races. It was also nice to see Michael and Robin out in SC1.

We set the start line just off WMBRC. There was a slight  delay to race 1 as WMBRC's cruisers were racing and had decided to use Mark 9 to S rather than P. RWYC were racing in the S lake as well so we both set mark 9 as S to avoid any chaos.

Courses: Race 1 - 5P 4S 9S 13P and Race 2 - 5P 12P.

Results for day 1's races are below. Day 2 is this coming Saturday, and 1 discard will apply if we get two races in. Having won both races on Day 1 SC1 say they're unable to sail Day 2 so once again the competition is very winnable.

A good turnout on a fine day gave close racing with occasionally challenging conditions for short handed crews. Pura Vida looked ahead on the water but corrected times show a different picture with Seventh Heaven taking Race 2 and the fleet close together for both races. Nevertheless, Pura Vida held on to pip Seventh Heaven to this year's September Cup.
